1. Use Painter's Tape

Use painter's tape to protect door hardware, windows, and the edges of the door where it meets the frame. Also, tape along the door frame, threshold, weatherstripping, and hinges if you’re not removing the door. This ensures sharp lines and prevents paint from getting on unintended surfaces.

2. Clean The Door Thoroughly

Clean the door thoroughly using a high-quality surface cleaner designed for pre-paint preparation. Make sure the surface is free of dirt, grease, and any previous residue. If you’re using a product like TSP, be sure to rinse it off with water. For cleaners that don’t require rinsing, like SafePrep by Natura, you can proceed directly to the next step once the door is clean and dry.

3. Lightly Sand The Door

Lightly sand the door using fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit works well). Focus on creating a smooth, even surface, especially if there are any rough spots or imperfections. Sanding also helps the primer adhere better to the surface.

4. Apply A Primer To The Door

Apply a high-quality primer to the door, especially if you're painting over a darker color or raw wood. We often recommend BeautiTone's Stick-it Primer for this step, as it provides excellent adhesion to the prepared surface. Be sure to let it dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding to paint. Use a brush for detailed areas and a roller for larger, flat sections.

5 . Apply Trim and Door Paint.

Once the primer is dry, apply a thin coat of high-quality trim and door paint. At our store, we recommend BeautiTone's Trim & Door Interior/Exterior paint because it's super durable both indoors and outdoors, as well as its Pearl finish. After the first coat is thoroughly dry, apply another coat, and repeat if necessary. Let the paint dry completely, and voila!
